Orthodontics is a specialist dental treatment to correct misaligned teeth and jaws. Orthodontic treatments include braces, plates and retainers.
We’ll pay benefits towards orthodontic services by a General Dental Practitioner or specialist dentist as long as claims are accompanied by a detailed treatment plan.
Orthodontics is only included on some products. We’ll only pay benefits towards dental and Orthodontic treatments that are delivered in person, and by a recognised provider. Dental and Orthodontic treatments are subject to annual limits, lifetime limits and waiting periods, check your product guide for more info.
If I switch health insurers do I have to serve any waiting periods?
If you’ve already served 12 months membership with your previous health insurer and were entitled to orthodontic benefits, you don’t have to serve the 12 months again.
However, if you’ve used all your entitlements with your previous health insurer when you switch, you’ll only be entitled to any difference between your previous health insurer’s benefits and the benefits you are entitled to on your ahm extras policy.
If you’re in the middle of treatment at the time of transfer, the lesser benefits will apply.
How do I claim for orthodontic treatment?
When paying the entire amount in a single payment, you need to send us the initial account and/or receipt on a standard claim form.
If you're paying by instalments, you need to send us any accounts and/or receipts on a standard claim form so we can process them as the treatment progresses. We will require confirmation from your dentist/orthodontist that treatment is still ongoing after the beginning of each financial year.
Claims will be paid according to payment date. The appropriate level of cover must be retained for
the duration of the treatment.
