Finding the right product has never been simpler.
As part of the reforms, hospital products will start to be categorised into basic, bronze, silver or gold product categories - making it easy to compare products across health insurers.
To belong to one of these product categories, the hospital cover needs to include standard clinical categories set by the government. In most cases, the higher the product category, the more standard clinical categories of hospital treatment you get. This isn't always the case though - some product names will also include a 'plus’ – for example, 'silver plus' means the hospital product includes more than the minimum required standard clinical categories for the silver category.
Standard clinical categories mean comparing apples with apples.
All private health insurers will have new and consistent standard clinical categories by 1 April 2020.
For example, the hospital treatments and services included under the new standard clinical category of
'Heart and Vascular System' will be exactly the same across all health insurers.
