New product categories make it easier to compare
As part of the reforms, hospital products will start to be categorised into ‘basic’, ‘bronze’, ‘silver’ or ‘gold’ categories - making it easy to compare products across health insurers. To belong to one of these categories, the hospital cover needs to include standard clinical categories set by the government. The higher the product category, the more standard clinical categories of hospital treatment you get.
Some product names will also include a ‘plus’ – for example, silver plus means the hospital product includes more than the minimum required standard clinical categories for a silver category.
Standard clinical categories make product inclusions consistent.
All private health insurers will have new and consistent standard clinical categories by 1 April 2020.
For example, the hospital treatments and services included under the new standard clinical category of 'Heart and Vascular System' will be exactly the same across all health insurers.
